Altea, the cultural capital of the region Valencia, is part of the province of Alicante and is situated at the so-called Costa Blanca, on the Mediterranean coast. The old town centre is situated on a hill. The picturesque church rises high above the bright white houses with its typical blue domes. The “Nuestra Señora del Consuelo” is also referred to as being the business card of the town.
The Costa Blanca naturally is the perfect destination for sun-, sand- and beach lovers. The various coastal towns all have their own typical Spanish charm with vast (pebble) beaches, boulevards and terraces. Altea is situated between Alicante (50 kilometres to the south) and Valencia (100 kilometres to the north). The nearestdicht big city, however, is popular seaside resort Benidorm.
Over the years, Altea has expanded across a vast area. Besides the town Altea, with its ancient town centre, the villages Altea La Vella, Pueblo Mascarat and Altea Hills are also part of the municipality. Nearby, you will also find the popular coastal towns Albir and Calpe. The latter is especially well-known for a large rock in the sea, named the “Penyal d’Ifac”, its fishing port, fish market and the many fish restaurants.
The big bathing resort Benidorm can be reached by car in less than fifteen minutes. The clean and safe beaches here have been awarded many times. Apart from sun bathing, you can also enjoy many (water) sports activities such as volleyball, beach football, or water-skiing (provided by the cableway ski installation of the water-ski school).
Had enough from all the sand between your toes? There are lots of other things to do in this beautiful environment. The narrow, winding and sloping streets in the old town centre, all offer magnificent views over the town and the Mediterranean. The “Sierra de Bernia”, the vast mountain area on the northside of Altea, offers various possibilities for walking, cycling and hiking purposes.
There are plenty of opportunities to entertain the entire family such as the multiple theme parks and water parks in and around Benidorm. Sporty people will have a fantastic time in “Parque de Foietes” where they can participate in various ball sports, run a lap or two at the athletics track or go for a swim in the pool with Olympic sizes. Benidorm will offer both the young and the old a great time, also until the wee hours.
Altea is particularly known as an artist village, which is why there are so many galleries and crafts shops located here. Perhaps you will find a suitable souvenir to take home with you in one of these shops! The area offers many great sites like “El Castell de Guadalest” (the castle of Guadalest) located at the northwester side of the village. The castle does not only give an insight into the old ways of life, it also offers a stunning view.
Altea has several supermarkets, a pharmacy, bakery, bike rental shop and a great variety in shops, restaurants and terraces.
