Did you know that Calpe has the smallest nature reserve of Spain? El Penyal d’Ifac: this 33-metre high limestone rock takes up an area of approximately 50,000 m2. The rock seems to rise from the Mediterranean Sea, but when climbing it, it doesn’t seem to be so small after all, especially during hot summer days.
The Costa Blanca naturally is the place to be for sun-, sea-, and beach lovers. The various coastal towns all have their own Spanish charm with vast (pebble) beaches, boulevards and terraces. Besides the famous rock, Calpe is also known for its fishing harbour, fish market and its many fish restaurants. Not far from Calpe you will find several other popular coastal towns such as Altea and Moraira. On the northside, the town of Benissa can be found, together with the beautiful “Jalón Valley”.
Looking for a bit more excitement? Benidorm can be reached by car in less than half an hour. The clean and safe beaches here have been awarded many times. Apart from sun bathing, you can also enjoy many (water) sports activities such as volleyball, beach football, or water-skiing (provided by the cableway ski installation of the water-ski school).
Had enough of all the sand between your toes? The beforementioned “Jalón Valley” is perfect for walking, mountain biking and horse-riding purposes. The area is well-known for its vast vineyards and valleys that turn soft pink each year around February. This due to the many almond trees growing and blooming here.
There are plenty of opportunities to entertain the entire family such as the multiple theme parks and water parks in and around Benidorm. Sporty people will have a fantastic time in “Parque de Foietes” where they can participate in various ball sports, run a lap or two at the athletics track or go for a swim in the pool with Olympic sizes. Benidorm will offer both the young and the old a great time, also until the wee hours.
Just outside the town, you can also find lots of different sights. On the southwester side of Calpe, the coastal town Altea can be found which is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful towns in the entire region. In the old town centre, you will find the magnificent church “Virgin del Consuelo”. The church square offers a fantastic view over the town with all of its small white houses. Further inland “El Castell de Guadalest”, the castle of Guadalest can be found. The castle does not only give an insight into the old ways of life, it also offers a stunning view.
Calpe has a large supermarket, a pharmacy, a bakery, a bike rental shop and a large offer of shops, restaurants and terraces. There is a large offer of cafés, from Dutch bar to British pub, which show the diversity in nationalities.
